It works for me. In my case, slax, Axiom-2008 and TeXmacs were installed from 
source. I put a script file in /etc/profile.d with:

export AXIOM=/usr/local/axiom/mnt/linux
export PATH=$PATH:$AXIOM/bin:

And axiom can be found by texmacs.bin.
