Some one compiled a recent version of TeXmacs for me, but he did it in the wrong place, so I can't use the maxima interface, for instance.

You need to have a look at where TeXmacs expects to find Maxima. Once
you know this, you can perhaps adjust your environment variables according
to the inner workings of the TeXmacs plugin for Maxima.

I find the download page's instructions helpless, I'm simply not qualified to use that information.

You should not exaggerate :-) ! Usually it's a matter of downloading
a file, plus issuing a certain number of commands in a shell.

I frequently post (answering or asking) to many other forums, but I find that this one is the most "by-geeks-for-geeks" I've encountered.

Here you could be right. I'm even afraid that what you say also
applies to the overall philosophy of TeXmacs ;-(...

Some simple issues, at least I think they are simple, that keep me using LyX or LaTeX form time to time are:

pstricks. I've posted before, without any sucess. The answer I've got was not helpfull, for it was addressed to someone with much higher computer science skills that mine.

My (short) answers to this question is that, although vector
graphics figures exist in TeXmacs, it's probably not soon
that they will operate like PsTricks does (e.g.: being able
to connect any two objects in the document by means of an arrow).

What could be imagined is something which would work like
the xypic plugin for drawing graphs in TeXmacs: you input
the chunk of LaTeX in a session, and you obtain the output
as a PS chunk.

I thank the guy who wrote to me, but, sorry, it wasn't helpfull.

xymatrix. Same thing.

the \xymatrix LaTeX construct is part of xypic. As far as I know,
there is a TeXmacs plugin for xypic, thus you should be able to
use xymatrix inside TeXmacs.

Defining shortucts/commands. I kow there is something about that in the manuals, but again... Have someone thought about making a "basic Texmacs for LaTeX users guide"?

I did (at least) two:

a Little TeXmacs Dictionary:
http://www.ags.uni-sb.de/~henri/texmacs/aLittleTeXmacsDictionary.pdf

a TeXmacs tutorial:
http://www.ags.uni-sb.de/~henri/texmacs/aTeXmacsTutorial.pdf

Enjoy !
