It just leaves the problem of the grouping of back-quote and apostrophe which probably shouldn't happen when mode=prog.
i.e. `` should not be kerned, nor should ' '

Joris, do you have any comments about this backtick weirdness?David Allouche made this decision a long time ago.
I think back ticks should have fixed width when mode=prog.
I'm curious about the reasoning behind backticks being exported in text
as unicode 0xE28098 which looks quite different.
I don't remember the rationale, but there surely was one.
I'm curious how that when a text file with a back-tick is imported aThank Knuth for using these characters in fonts.
different symbol is show on the screen (looks like a normal back-tick,
i.e. a grave accent instead of a back-quote).
Perhaps when the back-tick key is pressed when mode=prog it should
generate the character represented as \0 (what a weird representation?);
and when mode=prog this character should be exported as ascii 0x60That would be the simplest thing to do.
instead of unicode 0xE28098
If this sounds reasonable to you I will try to contrive it and send aI don't really know; please investigate... --Joris
patch, although I fear that interpreting a keystroke differently when
mode=prog will be simpler than cut-n-paste differently into a place
where mode=prog - perhaps you could advise?
