If you write a symbol with both an upper index and a lower index, it is the
one you write first that is sometimes omitted from the selection. The reason
for this seems to be that the index you write first, actually appears second
in the TeXmacs source of the document. For example, if you write the
equivalent of p^i_k, writing the i before the k, it appears in the TeXmacs
source as

<math|p<rsub|k><rsup|i>>

while if you write the k first, it appears in the TeXmacs source as

<math|p<rsup|i><rsub|k>>

If we now select p^i_k with the mouse, where we wrote the i first, and the
purple cursor is either to the left or right of the k at the end of the
selection sweep, then the i is omitted. But if the purple cursor is either
to the left or right of the i at the end of the selection sweep, or is
vertical and to the right of the whole combination, then nothing is omitted.
On the other hand, if the k was written first, then the k is omitted if the
purple cursor is to the left or right of the i at the end of the selection
sweep.

So if you are selecting something that was written earlier, and you are not
sure whether the superscript or subscript was written first, it is best to
make sure the purple cursor ends up vertical, and to the right of the whole
combination.

The above all assumes you make the selection sweep from left to right. If
you instead do the selection sweep from right to left, so the purple cursor
ends up either to the left or the right of the p, then again, nothing is
omitted.
