those characters are obtained not via "<", but via "\"
this is what I typed (here, <return> is a single key stroke)

\ a s s i g n <return>
and then x and then the value of x

in the other one I type

\ i m a g e <return key>

and in the place where you are supposed to enter the address, you type

\ x <return>
