You do not need to type inactive...

If you later want to modify the value of x, you can go to the place
where the x is and then press backspace.

I am not sure, but it seems that you can start, for a document, a preamble...

Regarding your other question, I am not sure; but probably you would
need to concatenate strings... I do not know how to make it work as
you want.

Maybe someone else might know...
