Hi Bernd,
I believe folks usually deal with this in one of three ways: if you sent the page type to papyrus (as if you were typesetting for one indefinitely long scroll) then it does not need to think about page breaks at all; if you are working on a multi-chapter book, you can show one part at a time, reducing the amount of pagination needed; finally, sometimes it is enough to set the page algorithm to its simplest setting (the opposite of professional). In this last case, one would then restore the page break settings before producing a final printed documents.

I'm typing up a book for myself in TeXmacs and I am adding in a ton of
footnotes. I have two pages written already with about 40 footnotes
and whatever I type now takes a while to show. I'm guessing that the
page breaking algorithm is running every time I type in a letter and
is thus causing a slow down. Hopefully this issue will be looked into
at some point in the future.
