Just some observations on issues mentioned by Jerzy, on Windows 8.1:
a. user manual works fine here
b. this issue is present. Inserting any type of image (I checked PDF, EPS and PNG), sets figure dimensions to Width:0px, Height:-2147483648px. Changing these values to something more sensible inserts the images correctly though. Except for PDFs, which are incorrectly cropped for some reason.
