Well, that is exactly what I thought several months ago.
But do we have to upgrade the scheme engine to provide a TeXmacs debian package ?
Why not using static linking ?
I am not familiar with Debian Packaging Policy. But there should be a feasible solution to provide a pre-built deb TeXmacs package bundled with guile 1.8. If it violates the Debian Policy. We may provide the deb via other ways.
And I planned to setup a Travis Build on Github and automatically build and ship the nightly TeXmacs. However, just got too busy these days and just had a long and happy trip this year (we Chinese have a 7-day holiday in October).
For getting TeXmacs (back) into Debian the issue is not TeXmacs itself, but Guile 1.8 on which TeXmacs depends and which is deprecated (It has received no updates in years) and no longer in Debian. Resolving the issue means shifting TeXmacs to another Scheme engine (not necesarily Guile 2.x). There have been several attempts, but it is absolutely non trivial. So, if one wants to get TeXmacs back into Debian repos, that's the top priority. The rest will be a piece of cake. On the other hand, installing TeXmacs in Debian and derivatives is no big deal: up-to-date .deb packages are available.
