you could use a vphantom to preserve vertical alignment:

<frac|1|n<rprime|'><rsup|2>>-<frac|1|<vphantom|n<rprime|'><rsup|2>>n<rsup|2>>

This becomes ugly (in my opinion) when using fractions with primed and unprimed variables next to each other (e.g. <frac|1|n<rprime|'><rsup|2>>-<frac|1|n<rsup|2>>, see attached image).

Any other ways to write these expressions?
