which definitely increases compile time a lot, but also leads to a
twofold increase of performance for the resulting binary (at least on
Intel).
OK, this explains it in part. On MacOSX, the optimisation flag chosen by default is now -O2, and this gives a factor of two in compile time. And the resulting binary is faster, indeed.
