I think there is a "copy to replace" and a "copy to search". Then do
a replace (just hit return in each) and it will replace it.
regarding the assign trick, you can do
<assign|dfrac|<macro|x|y|<frac|<arg|x>|<arg|y>>>>.
See the documentation. (esc-tab gives the option to add extra arguments)
