Hmm, maybe the interface could be somewhat improved (especially when a
selection is active).
Anyway, the idea is to insert your script before your matrix in that case.
You may actually wish to define a macro for transposition.
I personally don't like the French left script convention very much and
prefer to use the 'top' symbol as a right superscript.

We might make the cursor position just after the sum sign inaccessible

You are right that we might have to disable "* |" as a shortcut.
It is more of a nuisance. I did my first commit since version 2.1
to fix this.
