Fwd: hiding images

I must correct myself.
It is not images that slow down the editor, but floating images.
I had to remove all floats in order to be able to edit my document again.
Has this problem a solution?

I'm always working on the very same document...
Now, after adding few images the editor is almost paralized, adding a single
byte results in minutes of computation to redraw the page (Duron 1000, 256 MB
ram ... not so bad!).

What can I do to be able to edit the document again?? :)
Should I hide the images? And if so, how can I?
