First, that is clearly a bug. TeXmacs should not become so slow.
Images are generally quite slow to render initially (because TeXmacs
uses GhostScript as a back-end), but then they are cached. So editing
speed should not be affected by images.
As usual, it would be more easy to help if we had the problematic
document...
But let me guess... are you using floating images and/or multicolumns?
I had myself experienced performance problems by combining these
features but I was unable to reproduce for Joris to fix. If that is
the case, really PLEASE send use the document... and I also know a few
tricks which would help your performance problems.
