I am not sure I understand what you are doing.
However direct linking of xfig images as well as linking of eps files
produced by xfig both appear to work properly here.

That is probably a wrong manipulation. The "null box" error is
produced when the output bounding box is found to be null. The output
bounding box is the image bounding box (as found after conversion and
postscript parsing) optionnally scaled and cropped according to the
parameters of the postscript element.
To be sure, clear all parameters (but the image name) of the
postscript element. To do that you have to backspace into the image,
that will disactivate it and allow you edit the parameters.
