By the way, the eqnarray* environment has default horizontal padding
between columns. The result is that column are separated by a default
2spc gap.

I do not know if that is the intended layout, but that definitely
makes the underlying table obvious to the attentive reader. Which may
not always be a good thing.

So, is the horizontal gap between columns in eqnarray* a feature or a
bug?
