I fully second this proposal. I have my thesis nearly finished now (60p, 20
EPS's, tables, floats, tons of formulas, and bibliography) without any
serious trouble. In my view, TeXmacs has passed the test for full production
quality.
Anyhow, handling of long documents clearly needs some improvement:
* fast browsing as proposed
* back-stepping after using cross-references of any kind
* folding of sections
* full layout view (separate pages displayed in columns next to each other)
None of these ideas is new, of course, so I guess, they have their respective
positions somewhere on the long priority list of "wouldn't it be nice"s...
