/tmp/foo permission problem

In running TeXmacs in our lab and using maxima session within it, a
number of students are getting the following error message at maxima
startup:

/usr/lib/texmacs/TeXmacs/bin/tm_maxima: line 4: /tmp/foo: Permission
denied

Apparently the file /tmp/foo is being created and is owned by the user
running the session for the first time on that particular machine with
644 permissions. Consequently, when someone else tries to do a maxima
session within TeXmacs this error is created. The only content
of /tmp/foo is:

5.9.1 gcl

presumably the version number of maxima. It seems unreasonable to have
tm_maxima echo this information to /tmp/foo. Is /tmp/foo being used in
some other script or can line 4 of tm_maxima be safely deleted?

Thanks for the great work. Bob

PS Any thoughts on my earlier post regarding the maxima session input
and output number problem?
