Customizing equation numbering

I have a couple questions that I'm trying to figure out with the
manual, but whose solutions so far have escaped me:

1) Using the book style, is there an automatic way to reset
equation-nr after each section? (I've been writing
"<assign|equation-nr|0>" every time so far.)

2) Is it possible to customize the equation numbering so that the
chapter number is omitted? That is, so that the forth equation in
Chapter 6 reads "(4)" instead of "(6.4)"?
