those suggestions seemed very promising at the first look,
but unfortunately they didn´t solve the problems at all:
1) with 'space yes' the space between the factor of products
is still much too small, so 'x y' and 'xy' actually are looking
almost identically on the screen - ok, that´s rather a problem
of TeXmacs but not of Axiom (or its interface). So I´ll better
stay with my own solution with the patched file 'AXIOM.o',
which now sends a '*' (instead of '\ ') for multiplication.
2) the setting 'over no' actually introduces more (new) problems
than it solves - now even such simple expressions like '1/(x+1)'
are displayed in 2D WITHOUT parenthesis, i.e. as '1/x+1', and
this is of course mathematically wrong!
Maybe you can imagine how unreadable (and also incorrect) even
more complicated expressions with ratios would be ... :-(
After having played around quite some time now with Axiom under
TeXmacs, I really have to say that TeXmacs may be a good program
for scientific word-processing, but it´s definitely unusable as
an user-interface for working with a CAS (like Axiom).
It displays (and maybe prints) the calculated expressions in a
pretty form, but you can´t really WORK with Axiom in it, e.g.
select any subexpressions from previous results as new input.
Now I´ve even switched to GnuEmacs (for Windows) as my new
interface to Axiom - it doesn´t look that nice, but with it
at least you can really work with Axiom! :-)
So I hope that sometime in the future anyone will program a
better, really usable GUI for Axiom (e.g. like wxMaxima for
Maxima) ...
Nevertheless many thanks for your answer,
Franz.
