This is somewhat off the previous topic, but I am about to start
working on a document in which I'll need to make a somewhat unusual
use of color for text. Specifically, in some cases I'll need to have a
single letter with two colors (e.g., one that is half pale blue and
half orange); this may need to be a very narrow letter such as "i", so
I may have to partition the letter vertically (e.g., top half blue and
bottom half orange) to make it visually evident (I'll also be using a
large font, of course).

Depends on the letter you want. The attached document
demonstrates how to do this with a table for the
letter "i", and gives an example with superposing
the letters "o" and "x". You could also try with
the TeXmacs vector graphics editor, although I didn't
tried this in my example (I would need more details
about what kind of multicolor letters you want to do
to be able to elaborate more my examples ; feel free
to give more details & ask more things in a followup
mail ;-).
