I just checked, the Debian versions on my desktop (where it work) are:
bob@penrose:~$ dpkg -l | fgrep guile
rc guile-1.6-libs 1.6.8-6
ii guile-1.8-libs 1.8.2+1-2
rc libguile-ltdl-1 1.6.8-6
So the Ubuntu does not seem to be quite up to Debian for the
guile-1.8-libs, perhaps that is part of the problem.
