To get rid of the angle brackets I have had to downgrade texmacs and
texmacs-common to 1:1.0.6-10 on our debian unstable 64 bit machine. I
have the same problem at home on my 32 bit debian unstable machine but
have not downgraded texmacs there yet.

The angle brackets appear in the file as <\ > when opened with emacs. If
removed using emacs, the file is good again. However, if the solve
command is run again they reappear. Also, if the file is saved, closed,
and then re-opened it is not displayed at all correctly, so there must
be something in the <\ > that does not show up in emacs. Texmacs
1:1.0.6-10 seems to work fine with maxima 5.13.0-3 on debian unstable.
