Oops,  I missed one step in my previous email on this subject --- the previously omitted phrase is in red in Step 6.

Dear all,

I use a IMac at home which runs Os X 10.4.  I have installed Darwinport (others may have Fink).  This is what I do to compile  each time there is a new version of TeXmacs becomes available.

  1. Download TeXmacs-*-src.tar.gz into some directory.
  2. Go to that directory and open the "configure" file in an text editor.
  3. Look for a line "powerpc-*-darwin*))"
  4. Replace it with "i*86-*-darwin* | powerpc-*-darwin*))"
  5. Save the file and exit.
  6. Open a terminal, go to that directory, and type "./configure ; make"  and press "enter"  -- go have a coffee.
  7. When you return, type "make install" and press enter.
  8. TeXmacs will be installed in /usr/local/share
  9. type "/usr/local/bin/texmacs"  in same terminal window and you will see that TeXmacs starts up.
Hope that helps.

I share Martin's point of view: I do think it to be useful to have a
TeXmacs distribution which takes about ten times less space in Fink than it
would take in an application bundle.

I share that point of view if you are a programmer. It's not my case. I have
to have installed Xcode and a lot of developer tools to install several Fink
packages I use, like Inkscape or TeXmacs. I believe that I would save much
more disc space using bundles than using Fink + developer tools.
