Hi Vincent,

I have successfully installed Debian Linux on a USB flash drive but have a small problem, it boots on some computers but not others. I have tried it on 6 different computers and it works on 3 of them! The other three behave as though the USB drive doesn't contain a bootable system - the computer doesn't even try to boot from it. I don't know why, perhaps it is the way I prepared the USB disc image, a limitation of the BIOS or my USB flash drive. Naturally, I have checked the BIOS settings and enabled the "boot from USB drive" options in every case. I'll do some googling to see if I can learn more.

My method is relatively simple. In essence, I create a virtual computer with a hard disc size slightly smaller than my USB flash drive, install the operating system then copy the hard disc image to my USB drive. In order to allow me to do this, I create the virtual machine using a VMDK-format hard disc image that I made using qemu-img. After installing the software, I convert the disc image file to "raw disc image" format, again using qemu-img, and copy it to the USB drive using the dd command. The fact that it works perfectly on three different computers suggests there is not very much wrong, or perhaps I am unlucky with the selection of computers available to me.

Although I shall write up my recipe for this, I thought I would also make disc images for a virtual machine and for a USB drive that you could download from our server. In order to minimise the download time via our slow "broadband" connection, the image file will contain a "small" Debian system that includes a simple script that you run which installs the remaining software packages to make the system complete. The additional software packages would be downloaded from Debian's server (or an on-site mirror if you have one). In this way, the most complicated steps have already been done for you while the bulk of download comes from Debian's servers (which have much higher bandwidth than ours!).

I just have a bit more work to do to prepare the setup script and disc images. It should not be very much longer!

Regards,

Paul.

do you have success with your researches for a "simple" installing of texmacs using virtual box ?

if i can help in any matter...

have a nice day !
