Currently I have a fairly small file in TeXmacs, the tm is ~900kB, with 13 images.

Might you per chance have activated the in memory caching of raw image data as we discussed some time ago? (see our discussion "EPS image is pixelated" at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/texmacs-dev/2013-08/threads.html )

Yes, you are right. That is on, and could cause the problem. Hmmm....

13 big images may very well account for those 300MB.

The images aren't that big on screen. They are about 552x552, and the png takes ~20kB on disk. The tm file is less than 1MB including the images.
Could this really blow up to 300MB?

Well, 13*552^2*3/1024 ~= 11.3MB so no, that shouldn't be a problem, unless they've been scaled many times (each scaling means a new entry in the cache). You could try to print out the size of the cache to sort out this as a possible cause.

Do you have debugging symbols on? If you are running from Xcode or using the default build config, chances are you do. (I think) this blows up memory usage of my executable to ~200MB.

Best,
