i just had to do a fresh install of ubuntu 16.04. I installed the .deb package from Philippe and all i can say is : so far, so good.

The static build of texmacs for linux available at texmacs.org is a pain to
install and it also has issues that dynamic builds do not have. I would advise
you to try the texmacs deb package for ubuntu  16.04 at this site :

https://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=home:slowphil:texmacs-devel&package=texmacs
