Hi Friedrich,
The 1600+ packages were because I had simply copied a spec file found on
opensuse which was (wrongly) specifying that texmacs depends on the whole
Texlive meta package... I removed that and the resulting new package
(ftp2.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/opensuse/repositories/home:/slowphil:/texmacs-
devel/openSUSE_Leap_42.2/x86_64/texmacs-1.99.5.svn10639-72.1.x86_64.rpm)
installs and starts flawlessly in a Leap42.2 virtual machine.
