It is difficult to pinpoint when it happens, but I was using "amsart" (I believe that it is similar to "article"). My impression is that it appears when there are very short sections, and I cannot understand the number of question marks (usually only some of page numbers are not computed, weird). But anyway, change to "paper" works. I am busy writing things so I cannot perform a systematic test.

Best wishes,

I think the problem is linked to the “generic” mode. If you switch to “article”  then the page numbers are computed even in papyrus mode.

Hi Frank,
I agree that exporting to PDF should raise a warning if the document has syntax errors or missing page numbers, etc.

Thanks for clarifications. (I did not classify it as a bug)

By the way, I find it counter-intuitive that it is still not computed after exporting to a PDF. A manual switching to paper mode is strictly necessary. I wonder whether I was wrong somewhere?

Hi Frank,
it is not a bug. Page numbers are not computed in Papyrus mode, you need to switch to Paper mode before updating the table of contents.
Do you get my point now on why you need to be specific when report what you think is a bug? ;-)

Hello,

I just had a try. Seemingly very universal therefore easy to catch one. I attached a MWE.

Steps to reproduce:

Just create these sections, then Insert -> Automatic -> Table of Contents, and press Ctrl-Shift-R several times, then the page numbers become question marks.

Best wishes,

Hi Frank,
I haven't heard of this earlier but this could have fallen below my radar. Given the scarcity of information that you provide, I think it is unlikely that anyone else will look into this. Please try at least to provide a minimal environment in which this bug can be observed (getting rid of unnecessary packages etc.) as well as a specific list of steps allowing others reproduce this bug, and even decide whether this is actually a bug.

Dear all,

Hello, I wonder whether this is a known issue: if I inserted a very short section (I am writing under the template amsart, I don't know whether it affects), and refresh the automated table of contents (repeatedly), some of these page numbers in the table of contents become [?] (the link is active, but the number vanishes).

I wonder whether there are known solutions for that. I feel sorry that I have no time to test systematically.
