Spacing after sums with limits above and below

Dear all,

after the summation symbol, the terms of the sum are separated by a nice space; if I put a subscript below the summation symbol, the nice spacing shrinks. I suspect it is because the typesetter sees the macro "below" and not the macro "big"; is there a workaround?
