Anyway, the user manual has improved over the last year. In paricular, Joris wrote a chapter about how to do your own style files.

For example, there are many elements where I cannot "look under the hood".
(because the backspace-trick does not work) How do I edit these in some
low-level mode?

Document->View->Edit Source Tree, if you feel you need it.
