Yes, you need the SVN version; I just added some extra support
for generating graphics in that way. The mechanism was
original designed for automatically generated help pages.

I further extended the support in SVN revision 12509.
You may try typing '!' inside a regular graphics
(Insert -> Image -> Draw image).
I included a few examples to get you started.
The code is a bit fragile, so I did not put it in the menus yet.

We might add more macros in the same spirit of what you have
been trying to do, besides raw scheme scripts.
And also remove the dependency on GNUplot for plotting
basic graphics using standard mathematical notation.
