This is very useful. However, at such huge font sizes, the strokes
that draw the characters become for some reason thinner, which is bad
for poster use.

An alternative which yields sharper contrast is to trace the bitmap
through potrace (potrace.sourceforge.net), which can be comfortably
called from Inkscape, the vector drawing program I am currently using.
