Yes, maxima is in $PATH, /usr/bin/maxima.

I use 
ecl:11.1.1
maxima-5.32.2

and executing " maxima_detect maxima" gets:
(
)
Then make a link as

/usr/lib/maxima -> /usr/lib64/maxima

and executing again gets:

"/usr/share/maxima/5.23.2/doc/html/maxima_toc.html"
