Read the source to the Zotero OpenOffice plugin. It actually commands the editor. There's a document you can found that explains the protocol, if you search for it with Google. I think a combination of your approach and a modified copy of the OpenOffice plugin, just the Firefox side, with scheme code in TeXmacs, is really the solution.

Hey, what a coincidence! However my little hack looks like a joke compared
to your project... Also the approach is opposite AFAICT: having zotero
pushing stuff to texmacs instead of texmacs querying stuff from zotero. Not
sure it would make much sense combining both approaches. In the future I
think I'd rather spend time helping to improve texmacs if and when I can.
