Thanks for the info. At any rate it is useful to know which viewers we can
recommend.

It is definitely the case that the minus sign is very thin for
the default (Computer Modern Roman) font, so some viewers may
very well round the width to zero. I guess that the TeX Gyre fonts
and the Stix font will all be better from this point of view.

I personally tend to use TeX Gyre Pagella nowadays.
