hi!

- QT version of texmacs is the "new" texmacs, it will be supported and developped and upgraded. It seems more "integrated" in the system it is installed on. it is easy to install because ready-to-use (is that what the word "binaries" mean ? something that is ready to use ? i was here to understand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_file)

Yes. Binary means here that you don't need to compile the program.

- GTK version of texmacs needs x11 and is complicated to install and will not be supported any longer but is quite stable, this is the reason why you suggest me to use it. It can be installed from sources (needs compilation, things i dont understand a word) or from binaries (ready to use) but the "ready" in this case is quite relative since it uses Fink and is quite difficult for some non specialist like me.

"Classic" TeXmacs uses X11 but it doesn't use gtk.

- there is an error on this page
because they say it is not possible for X.6 and you say it is.

TeXmacs can be installed on a 10.6 system: http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/texmacs

Here are the steps to install Fink in a 10.4+ mac: http://www.finkproject.org/download/srcdist.php

- i dont understand the interest of using fink or macports to install the QT version of texmacs on mac os X since there is a dmg version

There were no binaries for the first releases of the QT version of TeXmacs. Now, I don't think anybody is going to compile TeXmacs.

- other question. i do not really understand why texmacs works, export to pdf, to tex etc without being very heavy to download (25Mo), althought a simple installation of mactex on mac is about two gigas to be donwloaded. How can texmacs do the same result as latex using hundred times less kilooctoets ? This part of your mail let me think that the dmg version is raeally lighter as the old version "Once you are ready, the last step will be to install TeXmacs. If I remember correctly LaTeX is a decency of TeXmacs, so again expect a long download and a longer compilation time. For all of this, you will need several GB of free space on your hard disc."

Because LaTeX does much more things than TeXmacs. In fact you could install a minimal LaTeX to use TeXmacs, but it's something I haven't done.

- if i use fink to install texmacs (the gtkx11 version) i will have two files "texmacs" with type "application" on my mac os X Finder.

To run TeXmacs, you have to open a Terminal (look for it using Spotlight) and type texmacs on it.

- if i have understood something in the former mails, there may be a problem with the QT version of texmacs concerning the exportation of png pictures to eps; this problem may not exist in the gtk version this this version has been improved, tested and retested.

As far I know, there were less problems. The problem I have now is that my mac is using Lion and I can't install the "classic" TeXmacs using Fink because it isn't available yet.

- do you think that the problems i show on www.elodouwen.ouvaton.org/MyGod2.zip should be resolved in a few months ?

No idea. I'm not a developer.

- does QT mean "quicktime" ?

Not here. Look http://qt.nokia.com/

- i want to try to use maxima, python, and surtout professor inside my texmacs. I have never succeed yet to install/use any of them. Do you think i have more chances to try with QT or with GTK ? Is it possible to ask that one day (soon) the dmg package of texmacs should contain also professor ? It would be one of the two big arguments to convince teachers of secondary school to adopt texmacs.

It's something I haven't tried. Probably it won't be really difficult to make TeXmacs run a session of Maxima. The problem is how to tell TeXmacs where Maxima is. Installing maxima/wxmaxima in a mac is really easy no. This is a short tutorial I wrote about it: http://www.faq-mac.com/tutoriales/instalacion-maxima-wxmaxima-mac-javier-arantegui/43521 (in Spanish, sorry)

- you tell me that to use fink or macports on mac os X i need xcode. but
-- xcode is by me a 8Mo little programm that let edit codes with colored tags. Do you mean maybe "developper tools" ? i have them

Yes, that is

-- on http://www.texmacs.org/tmweb/download/fink.en.html they say that dev tool is necessary only in the step 6 that is to say if you want to compile from source that is to say if you want the latest version and doing things by yourself. If i follow steps 1 to 5 i used to believe that dev tool would not make any intervention

Old instructions. For a 10.6 system, you will need the developer tools. As far I know, neither fink nor macports have binaries of TeXmacs.

- are tetex and x11 two concurrent programms that do the same fonction ? "The next thing to check is whether you already have teTeX and/or X11 installed"

No, they are different.

- important question : if i work just now on my documents with the dmg texmacs, can i take them and edit and woirk them with the GTK version (if i manage to install it...) or will i have to rewrite again documents from the beginning ?

Yes. They should be fully compatible. I have used both versions in the past without problems.
