This would be great! :-)

No, I just tried ispell on the commandline and -latin1 is _no_
standard option.

I can spellcheck a Text in ISO-8859-1 with

ispell -d deutsch Text.txt

The -d switch selects the dictionary, in my case deutsch which is on
my system (Debian 3.0) a link to ngerman (maybe I did it by hand)

When I spellcheck a verbatim export of a texmacs-file with the wrong ß
in it, ispell fails to spell the words with ß correctly. In texmacs
itself it even fails to spellcheck words with umlauts which are
correctly encoded.

There are some other options in ispell, which are useful and should be
configurable.

-C Consider run-together words as legal compounds.

-P Don't generate extra root/affix combinations.

-m Make possible root/affix combinations that aren't in the
dictionary.

-S Sort the list of guesses by probable correctness.

-d file Specify an alternate dictionary file. For example, use -d
deutsch to choose a German dictionary in a German
installation.

-p file Specify an alternate personal dictionary.

-w chars Specify additional characters that can be part of a word.

I found no hint to encoding in the manpage. So maybe ispell can
automagically detect it.

I can spellcheck on the commandline a file in 8859-1 and 8859-15
without problems. But it does not work with a file in utf-8. All files
created with emacs and mule.

Ciao!
