You're turning around the node.
Of course there are other ways texmacs's user base can be enlarged, still it
is undeniable that it would spread much faster if it was (or could be, which
is not the same) integrated into larger, widely spread projects such as Gnome
or Kde.

Mainly two things:
- drag and drop (very useful and time saving feature)
- look and feel consistency (the same interface for browsing files that you
have in all the other applications you use, a similar behaviour for similar
tasks...; having to learn the use of a program takes less than having to
learn both the program _and_ the interface, which is a separate issue).

I didn't say it is impossible to do without it, I just say it would be better
with it.
Further more, as all the major distributions are working hard to provide
coherent and omogeneous desktop environments, it is likely that they will
sooner or later stop providing non-standardized packages.
If it is not a great issue, as there will always be some packager
contributing
them for many distributions, it would be far better if texmacs was *part* of
a key-component (kde, gnome) of major distributions, and as such was
provided, and especially _supportd_, along with them.
