No need to downgrade. Just launch TeXmacs in an xterm or whatever type of window you have on your system. Then shift a bit the xterm on the right or left as you want so that you can see both the TeXmacs window and the xterm. Whenever you load (or TeXmacs loads) and image, you'll see the hang in the xterm, then type ctrl-C (or the equivalent) in the xterm and you're done, the image loads gracefully and there is no more hang (i.e. till you load another image).

At least, work for me for about two months. Not ideal but far better than downgrading and having another applications which refuse to work as they want ghostscript 8.
