Your guess is wrong when using a window manager like windowmaker which gives you the opportunity to have menus under which you define the command to launch, in this case the job is launched in the background, so you can no more control the process (just kill it). Launching it in an xterm and not in the background allows you to have control on the xterm where you can unhang if I dare say so the process.

And by the way, I never said it fixed the problem, I just said it's a possible work-around (hopefully temporary).

Anyway, there does not seem to be GhostScript 8 in Debian yet.
It is under Fink (Mac port), and again Texmacs wants GhostScript 6.x, so...
