[TeXmacs] figures in Texmacs

There were several theses (spectroscopy) written with Texmacs in my group. Text and formulae were a dream to work with, but figures tended to present problems with speed. As long as their number was small, this could be handled, but now it appears to have become unsurmountable in a thesis which contains typically more than a dozen figures in individual chapters.

Most of these figures are black and white line spectra, so they really represent small files only of typically 15-50 KB as most is white background, but in order for keeping resolution for later printing and pdf export, we need frames of about 3000x3000 pixels. When a document with even a few such 20 KB pictures is opened, or once finally opened, scrolled over parts which contains pictures, Texmacs resizes the picture frames. This seem to take copious amounts of time, far more so than opening the same pictures with a standard picture viewer, or a graphics program.

The speed problem disappears or is greatly reduced by a reduction of the frame width to below 560 pixels, as Texmacs then no longer resizes the frames, but this leads to a wholy unacceptable print (and also viewing) quality.

We have tried to find information on the problem in the documentation on Texmacs but so far to no avail, and we have tried various picture formats (png, jpg, ps, pdf, svg), but they do not make a decisive difference.

Is there a solution to this problem? It is rather catastrophic for the present work.

Kind thanks for any help,

Werner Hug
