hi Alfe

if i understand well..
when i open a other file with texmacs, it is opened in the same windows as the first document still opened
and you can only see the foreground
and the "buffer" menu is a means to permute the documents at the foreground ?

and for the manipulations you describe, well, maybe i made a false one
but normally i only work like this:
i open several windows in the terminal of mac os X
then each time i need a new document at the screen i type "texmacs " and i slide the icon of the file after the spaceblank after the word "texmacs" i just typed in the terminal and then i press enter
that is less simple as double clinking but it works

i suppose that in a linux environment it is more simple and i apologize for Paul i did not manage to find time to explore the text you said me about how to connect virtual debian with usb key

Yes.

that is to say one buffer for each window.

No. Each instance of TeXmacs has a list of buffers and a list of windows. Both are rather independent from each other.

So why would there be an other buffer at the background ?

If you are editing a file in TeXmacs, you can create another buffer by e. g. loading another TeXmacs file (F2 or File->Load...) or by creating a new buffer (M-F2 or File->New). Do this several times and the Go menu will show one entry for each created buffer. Just one of them is displayed in the window, the other ones are in the background (not visible).

You also can make TeXmacs open a new window (M-S-F2 or View->Clone window); each window can display one of the existing buffers, two windows can display different buffers or the same buffer (in which case editing the buffer in one window will be shown immediately in the other window as well). You can choose for each window which buffer shall be displayed by using the window's Go menu.

Alfe
