I'm afraid we got carried away and didn't even answer your question…

As a workaround the bug, you will have to explicitly set the font size,
family, color, etc. manually around your footnote. Just create your footnote
normally then Edit->cut it, now make your changes using the menu Format
(size, etc) and paste the footnote back in.
