Like for running any X11 application, you have to set the DISPLAY
environment variable. On MacOSX, there is a special command that does
this for you if you don't want to learn how to do it: open-x11. Just run

open-x11 texmacs

This will even start X11 if it isn't yet running.

Another option I use on the Mac is to just ignore Apple's "Terminal"
application entirely and start an xterm in X (one typically starts
automatically when you start the X server). The xterm mill have the
DISPLAY set properly, and you can just type "texmacs" or whatever you
want. My recollection from the last time I looked at Apple's
"Terminal" program with the "activity monitor" was that the Terminal
took up as much RAM as X11 with an xterm, so I've stopped using
"Terminal" entirely, since I often want to run something in X sooner
or later anyway.
