I'm still having trouble with this. I have installed imagemagick, and
confirmed that convert works (by trying it on the file I wish to use).
It does work, and is on the path.

I also downloaded the latest linux static image, but got a library
error of some sort when I ran it (which surprised me quite a bit,
since I thought that shouldn't happen on a staticly linked image?).

As was noted, I am using guile 1.4; I'll contact my sysadmin about
this, but if others with more recent versions of guile are also having
this trouble, I fear this will not fix it...

For reference, this is on an i686 system running Ubuntu linux (most
recent distribution as of a few weeks ago; I'm not sure why we got
guile 1.4 with it...).

Then it is very likely a problem of your system and not related to
the configuration options.

Probably Joris might know something more.
