One possible caveat for anyone switching to MacOS 10.4: If you plan to
use Apple's X server, make _sure_ you install it from the disk when
you initially install/upgrade the system; it is my impression that you
can no longer add X to an existing system (without re-installing from
scratch).

Is Apple's X server something that has to be installed seperate of the actual upgrade to 10.4? Meaning after you upgrade you have to additionally install Apple's X server from the DVD.

I actually can't verify this myself, as I have been switching back
from MacOS to a mix of OpenBSD and Linux, but I have a colleague with
a newer Mac laptop who has had this problem. Or, if I have been
misinformed, please let me know; I wouldn't normally post something
I've not verified, but since this is something you don't want to
discover later, I thought I should not remain silent.

Thanks for the information. I've also been tossing around the idea of installing opensuse 10.1 on this laptop (cause it's free, and will have the latest TeXmacs distribution). But, I just got this laptop (my first mac) and I'm really liking the functionality so that's why I'm thinking of just upgrading to Tiger. Since I'm a student it's only $69.

Does this mean that there is no way to redefine the
table-of-contents-text macro in 1.0.4? If not, then I guess I'll have
to suck it up and update my laptop to OS X Tiger.

I don't have in mind the precise state of art of each version.
Version 1.0.4 is quite old, but I think that the table-of-contents-text
macro already existed. In order to be sure, type
"\table-of-contents-text"
followed by return.

The "\table-of-contents-text, return" gives and Error:unknown command.
Just for the information.

I'll upgrade to Tiger so that I can use the latest TeXmacs build.

Thanks for your help.

However, as a general rule, I have no time to maintain older versions.
Problems in previous versions are often fixed in newer ones,
so the best thing is to keep up with the latest stable releases.

Best wishes, Joris
