One possible caveat for anyone switching to MacOS 10.4: If you plan to
use Apple's X server, make _sure_ you install it from the disk when
you initially install/upgrade the system; it is my impression that you
can no longer add X to an existing system (without re-installing from
scratch).
I actually can't verify this myself, as I have been switching back
from MacOS to a mix of OpenBSD and Linux, but I have a colleague with
a newer Mac laptop who has had this problem. Or, if I have been
misinformed, please let me know; I wouldn't normally post something
I've not verified, but since this is something you don't want to
discover later, I thought I should not remain silent.

I've never heard of any problems installing X11 after the fact, unless
it's a -reinstallation-. In that case you'd need to remove
/Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg and /Library/Receipts/X11SDK.pkg
