I actually can't verify this myself, as I have been switching back
from MacOS to a mix of OpenBSD and Linux, but I have a colleague with
a newer Mac laptop who has had this problem. Or, if I have been
misinformed, please let me know; I wouldn't normally post something
I've not verified, but since this is something you don't want to
discover later, I thought I should not remain silent.

I've never heard of any problems installing X11 after the fact, unless
it's a -reinstallation-. In that case you'd need to remove
/Library/Receipts/X11User.pkg and /Library/Receipts/X11SDK.pkg
