Is Apple's X server something that has to be installed seperate of the
actual upgrade to 10.4? Meaning after you upgrade you have to
additionally install Apple's X server from the DVD.

You can do that--though I believe it's also selectable among "Optional
Installs" when you update (it's been a while). It's X11User.pkg

If you're planning to build from source, you'll also need to install
the X11SDK package from the Xcode Tools (and you'll need them,
anyway).

Thanks for the information. I've also been tossing around the idea of
installing opensuse 10.1 on this laptop (cause it's free, and will have
the latest TeXmacs distribution). But, I just got this laptop (my first
mac) and I'm really liking the functionality so that's why I'm thinking
of just upgrading to Tiger. Since I'm a student it's only $69.
